The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is offering an exciting internship opportunity within the Industry and Economy Division, Chemicals and Health Branch, at the Nairobi duty station. This internship provides an opportunity to contribute to the global agenda on the sound management of chemicals, waste, and pollution prevention, aligned with UNEP’s overarching mission of environmental protection and sustainable development.

About UNEP

UNEP is the leading global environmental authority, responsible for setting the global environmental agenda, promoting the coherent implementation of sustainable development within the United Nations system, and serving as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. Within UNEP, the Chemicals and Health Branch leads the sub-programme on Chemicals, Waste, and Air Quality, delivering technical and scientific support to countries and multilateral environmental agreement (MEA) secretariats.

Internship Overview

Under the supervision, guidance, and mentorship of the Programme Management Officer, the intern will engage in supporting one or more of the following topics based on the Secretariat’s needs and the candidate’s interests:

1. Preparatory Work for OEWG 3.2

Responsibilities:

  • Support preparations for the resumed third session of the ad hoc open-ended working group on a science-policy panel for sound chemicals and waste management and pollution prevention (OEWG 3.2).
  • Assist in awareness-raising and information-sharing activities, including drafting web content, fact sheets, and similar materials.
  • Provide support for other related tasks as needed.

2. SPP Stakeholder Database

Responsibilities:

  • Support the development of a Science-Policy Panel (SPP) stakeholder database.
  • Assist in managing and monitoring the database to ensure effective stakeholder engagement.
  • Perform additional related tasks as required.

3. Data Integration Platform on Chemicals and Pollution

Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the development of a data integration platform focused on chemicals and pollution, including desk research, data collection, and information integration.
  • Collaborate with existing platforms and initiatives working on similar topics or objectives.
  • Assist in related activities as necessary.

Expected Outcomes

The intern will gain hands-on experience in supporting UNEP’s work on chemicals and waste management while contributing to high-priority initiatives. This role offers an excellent opportunity to engage in meaningful environmental work and expand technical and professional skills within a globally recognized organization.

Qualifications/Skills Required

Applicants must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).
  • Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s equivalent).

Preferred areas of study include environmental sciences, data analysis, engineering, computer science, or a related field. Proficiency in computer skills, including word processing, PowerPoint, Excel, and web-based platforms, is essential.

Languages

Proficiency in English is required. Additional languages are an asset.

Duration

This is a temporary internship. The specific duration will be determined in consultation with the selected candidate and the hosting division.
