About UN-Habitat
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is the UN agency dedicated to promoting socially and environmentally sustainable cities and human settlements. With a presence in over 90 countries, UN-Habitat works to implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the New Urban Agenda (NUA).
This internship is based at the UN-Habitat headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, within the Coordination Office of the Regional Programme Division (RPD/CO). The RPD/CO plays a critical role in coordinating regional programmes and country-level activities. The selected intern will support the Shanghai Award and the Shanghai Manual 2025 annual report through various advocacy, communication, and project management activities.
Internship Overview
The internship focuses on supporting the third cycle of the Global Award for Sustainable Development in Cities (Shanghai Award) and the Shanghai Manual. These initiatives aim to advance SDG 11, promote local implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and develop best practices for sustainable urban development.
Interns will gain hands-on experience in project support, communication strategies, branding, research, event organization, and technical document development. The role will involve close collaboration with various UN-Habitat teams, stakeholders, and external partners.
Key Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Inter-Regional Advisor of the Regional Programme Division, the intern will:
- Draft, edit, and prepare publicity materials related to the Shanghai Award, including news stories, newsletters, emails, social media content, and outreach materials.
- Support updates and maintenance of content on the Shanghai Award website and other digital platforms.
- Assist in the development and organization of technical documents related to the Shanghai Award application and review process.
- Conduct research and contribute to communication strategies and branding development for both the Shanghai Award and the Shanghai Manual.
- Assist in database development and manage outreach activities.
- Support the planning and organization of meetings, workshops, seminars, and events related to the Shanghai Award and Shanghai Manual.
- Provide general project management and administrative support.
- Perform any additional tasks assigned by the supervisor.
Preferred Areas of Study
Applicants should have an academic background in one or more of the following fields:
- Communications
- Media Studies
- Journalism
- Public Relations
- International Relations
- Urban/Public Policy
- Any other related field
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria at the time of application:
- Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).
- Be in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent).
- Have graduated with a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. degree.
Applicants must also:
- Be proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
- Demonstrate a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and a commitment to its values.
- Have the ability to interact with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and respect differing perspectives.
Additional Considerations
- The internship is unpaid and full-time.
- Interns are expected to work five days a week under the supervision of a UN-Habitat staff member.
- Work hours will be determined based on individual discussions between the intern and their supervisor.
