Introduction
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the environmental agenda and promotes sustainable development worldwide. Based in Nairobi, UNEP’s Corporate Services Division, Enterprise Solutions Section (ESS), is dedicated to enabling efficient programme delivery using cutting-edge knowledge management and information technology solutions.
UNEP is looking for young, innovative, and solutions-driven individuals to join its dynamic team as Information Management/Knowledge Interns . This internship offers an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in information management, digital transformation, and environmental data processing.
The internship will last between three (3) to six (6) months and will be unpaid , requiring a full-time commitment of 35-40 hours per week .
Job Description & Responsibilities
As an Information Management/Knowledge Intern, you will contribute to various projects within the Enterprise Solutions Section (ESS) and gain hands-on experience in information management platforms and digital transformation initiatives. Your responsibilities will include:
- Assisting in the specification, design, development, implementation, and maintenance of new information management platforms within UNEP.
- Enhancing the functionality and content of existing information management platforms and digital workflow projects.
- Supporting green information technology (IT) projects that promote sustainability within UNEP’s IT operations.
- Conducting research on information management strategies by collecting, analyzing, and presenting statistical data from diverse sources.
- Supporting ESS outreach and internal communication activities to promote knowledge-sharing and digital collaboration.
- Assisting in streamlining the electronic central file system , ensuring efficient structuring of information and folders.
- Contributing to UNEP’s digital transformation deliverables by supporting innovation and process improvements.
- Engaging in ongoing projects led by ESS, gaining practical experience in digital solutions and IT-enabled environmental initiatives.
- Depending on the phase of the project and the intern’s area of interest, supporting in research, analysis, design, development, testing, training, user support, or outreach activities .
- Performing other duties as directed by the supervisor to support UNEP’s mission and strategic goals.
Qualifications & Skills
Applicants for this internship should meet the following requirements:
- Currently enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent or higher).
- Enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent).
- Graduated with a university degree within the last year and able to commence the internship within one year of graduation.
- Preferred fields of study: Information Management, Information Science, Environmental Science, Engineering, Communications, Design, Art, or related fields .
- IT Proficiency: Skilled in using various IT tools and databases. Familiarity with the following tools is an advantage: Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, PowerApps, JIRA, Confluence, and Moodle .
- Communication Skills: Ability to communicate effectively in a complex, multicultural environment.
- Commitment to UN Ideals: Demonstrated interest in the work of the United Nations and commitment to the values of the UN Charter.
- Interpersonal Skills: Ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and openness to different viewpoints.
- Extracurricular Involvement: Experience in extracurricular activities is considered an advantage.
