About UN-Habitat
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is the UN agency dedicated to sustainable urban development. UN-Habitat’s mission is to promote socially and environmentally sustainable cities, ensuring adequate shelter for all. This position is part of the Urban Basic Services Section within the Urban Practices Branch (UPB) of the Global Solutions Division (GSD) in Nairobi. The Global Solutions Division leads the programmatic direction of UN-Habitat, focusing on tools, methodologies, training, and capacity-building for Member States and partners.
The Urban Practices Branch develops technical guidance, policies, and best practices to improve urban living conditions. The Urban Basic Services Section specifically works on expanding access to essential urban services such as water, sanitation, mobility, transport, energy, and waste management, while leveraging innovative technologies for improved service delivery.
Position Overview
The Zero Waste Intern will work within the Solid Waste Management Team and support the Secretariat of the UN Secretary-General’s Advisory Board on Zero Waste . The intern will assist with research, stakeholder engagement, documentation, communication, and administrative tasks related to zero-waste initiatives. This internship provides an opportunity to contribute to global efforts in sustainable urban development and zero-waste goals.
Key Responsibilities

Research and Documentation
- Conduct research on zero-waste policies, strategies, and best practices.
- Assist in the collection and analysis of data on waste management.
- Contribute to the preparation of reports, briefing notes, and presentations.

Stakeholder Engagement and Communication
- Support engagement with stakeholders, including governments, NGOs, and private sector partners.
- Assist in organizing meetings, workshops, and events.
- Contribute to the development of communication materials and outreach efforts.

Capacity Building and Training
- Support the development of training materials on zero-waste initiatives.
- Assist in coordinating knowledge-sharing sessions and webinars.

Monitoring and Evaluation
- Track and document progress on zero-waste initiatives.
- Assist in developing indicators to measure the effectiveness of policies and programs.

Administrative and Logistical Support
- Assist with the organization of travel logistics for events and meetings.
- Maintain and update relevant databases and records.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications and Skills
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria at the time of application:
- Be enrolled in a graduate school program (Master’s or equivalent).
- Be in the final academic year of a first university degree (Bachelor’s level or equivalent).
- Have recently graduated with a Bachelor’s, Master’s, Ph.D., or equivalent degree.
Additional requirements:
- Strong analytical, research, and communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Interest in sustainability, zero-waste policies, and urban development.
- Ability to work in a multicultural environment and adapt to diverse perspectives.
- Prior knowledge or coursework in international development, urban planning, environmental science, communications, or related fields is preferred.
